Silver Entrepreneur Interview with Stella and Penina Jewellery

Penina, the Hebrew word for pearls, is a home grown jewellery brand created in 1999 by Singaporean Silver Entrepreneur, Mrs Stella Leow. A mechanical engineer by training, she applies a keen eye for detail and beauty, combined with technical knowledge to create her unique jewellery pieces.

I want to make pearl jewellery affordable to all. When I hear people tell me that they are happy to have an opportunity to wear pearls, it is very satisfying and rewarding. The main reason for the affordability is the new fresh water pearl technologies available today that can replicate the same effect of more expensive sea cultured pearls.

“I choose to price my creations between S$18 – S$180 to make it affordable for everyone to own a beautiful piece of handmade pearl jewellery. You could be wearing a plain t-shirt, but once you add on a necklace, it transforms the look completely.”

Mrs Stella Leow, 63 years old, Silver Entrepreneur, Singapore

My journey started more than 10 years ago. I get my inspiration from many different areas – my travels, observations of American runway trends (which are a year ahead), or even interesting sculptures or other jewellery pieces. Sometimes I see a piece of jewellery and I think about how to integrate pearls into it. It is really all in my head, and when I have something in mind, I discuss with my materials supplier, we try to deconstruct it step by step, and that’s how I create something different.

I hope to develop more collections in future, and start teaching classes. This business is more like a hobby to me, and not for income. It provides me with my freedom money to give back to society, and organisations I have given the net proceeds to include the Batam School, Art for Seniors programme by Ageing Asia, and various Christian education causes.

If there is one thing you would like to change about ageism? What would it be?

When I was in New York, I recall walking down the streets and admiring how the ladies in their 90s in orthopaedic shoes, but are so well dressed and looking elegant.

Even though our youth is fading off, we can still dress up. It gives the person self-esteem, to know that you are not fading. You are maintaining.  Old people can dress simply, but use jewellery to add on the sophistication. You could be wearing a plain t-shirt, but once you add on a necklace, it transform the look completely.

Penina Jewellery is available for sale on the Ageing Asia Marketplace with net proceeds donated to charitable causes.
