Silver Entrepreneur Interview with Edwin and Uncle Chia Aquaponics

Uncle Chia Aquaponics is a hobby project by Singaporean Silver Entrepreneur, Mr Edwin Chia. He combines his love for fishes and gardening into creating mini sustainable urban farming pods.

It started from having a few small pots of plants in the balcony at home, and a mini pond of fishes. He had a natural curiosity about gardening and a love for plants and fishes. When he was given the opportunity to transform a rooftop balcony from concrete garden to urban oasis, he was excited and jumped on it. In the past seven years, he has harvested melons, ladies fingers, limes, chillis, laksa leaves, and even a few pineapples. He keeps experimenting with new herbs and vegetables to plant, currently, his trying to grow lemons and papayas too.  He heads to the garden once a week with his wife Maureen, and it has also become a Saturday couple’s activity that both enjoy and look forward to.

“I am not just looking to sell a pod, that is just a start. You do not need to have any prior gardening experience, but you must be interested to learn. I hope to transfer the entire gardening experience and knowledge and create a community.”

– Mr Edwin Chia, 71 years old, Silver Entrepreneur, Uncle Chia Aquaponics, Singapore

Edwin is an active ager who is still working in a full time role, but pursues his gardening pursuits on the weekend. He also volunteers at a nursing home once a week with a group of fellow gardening enthusiasts who hope to provide a beautiful garden experience for the senior residents.

If there is one thing you would like to change about ageism? What would it be?

We are living longer, but healthier than past generations. I hope more people can be more open minded about how they view the capabilities of older people. I am proud to be an active 71 year old.

Uncle Chia Aquaponics is available for sale on the Ageing Asia Marketplace via ASPIRE55’s Happy Life Store.
