Gardens for Nature and People

On 2 Jul 2021, Ms Pui Cuifen, Co-creator and Guide of Food Citizen, joined the Ageing Asia Age Well Think Big webinar to share about food gardens in Singapore and how gardens are spaces to care about nature and people. She was joined by fellow Guide from Food Citizen, Ms. Liow Oi Lian, in the discussion segment. Oi Lian shared about composting at home and in community gardens. Both of them are members of a wider community where people work to co-create a fair, inclusive, regenerative food system for all.

Cuifen and Oi Lian joined us at last Friday’s talk show. Both of them are passionate about sustainability, edible gardens, composting, and community. They are members of an informal network of people who come together to create a fair, inclusive, regenerative food system for all. Both firmly believe in the value of nature-based food gardens where both nature and people are taken care of.

Cuifen co-creates Food Citizen as a business that emerged from the informal network. Food Citizen collaborates with individuals to turn local experience and stories into programs, workshops, and talks for schools, businesses, and communities. The team at Food Citizen focuses on deepening the knowledge on the full cycle of food matters, and how we can shift into new practices and mindsets as better citizens of Earth. Oi Lian was one of the people invited by Food Citizen to share her knowledge in workshops and talks. Oi Lian also runs her own business, Passionate Gardeners.

“Through my garden-related exploration, I have discovered much about life, people, nature and food.” Pui Cuifen (39 years, Co-creator of Food Citizen)

As the main speaker, Cuifen shared that she doesn’t identify as a gardener. Interestingly, gardens have been a big part of her explorations into sustainability and community. Cuifen was inspired by overseas farms and food gardens. She documented valuable knowledge and stories from local farmers and edible gardeners with the hope of making them available to more people. Cuifen highlighted key aspects of local food gardens where nature and people are cared for. She concluded her sharing by bringing everyone on a virtual tour of a biodiverse edible garden in Boon Lay.

“I’m always happy that people are willing to start learning composting from me as it shows me that there is still hope for the future.” Lotus, Liow Oi Lian. Food Citizen collaborates with Oi Lian to turn her knowledge and stories into workshops and talks for schools, businesses, and communities. Oi Lian also recently started her own business, Passionate Gardeners.

Both Cuifen and Oi Lian are Compost Makers. A former engineer who has also worked in the charity sector, Oi Lian began her journey as a gardener and compost maker when she witnessed firsthand the damaging effect of engineering on the environment. In the discussion that followed Cuifen’s sharing, Oi Lian mentioned how she makes compost at home and with the community. She recommends upcycling materials that are already available at home, in the garden, or in the neighborhood.
